Changes to Virginia's Tax-Free Weekend for 2017
In the past, the Virginia offered separate sales tax holidays for back-to-school shopping, hurricane-preparedness, and Energy Star products. For the first time, the events will be combined into one tax-free weekend, scheduled for August 4-6, 2017.
3 Ways to Save During Virginia's Tax-Free Weekend
During Virginia's sales tax holiday, you will not be charged sales tax when purchasing the following items:
- School supplies, clothing, and footwear. This applies to clothing and footwear under $100 per item and school supplies under $20 per item. Take note that some items, such as sports equipment, may not be exempt from sales tax during Virginia's sales tax holiday. For maximum savings, look for off-season items like winter coats and boots, which may be available at reduced prices in the summer.
- Hurricane and emergency preparedness equipment. This savings opportunity applies to general hurricane preparedness supplies priced under $60 per item, as well as portable generators costing less than $1,000 each. While waiting to buy these items in August will help you save money, remember that your family's safety is more important. So if you truly need these items, consider buying them before hurricane seasons kicks on in early June and skipping the sales tax savings. If a storm hits, you'll be glad you planned ahead!
- Energy StarTM and WaterSenseTM products. Need to purchase new window air conditioners or update your hot water heater? If you can hold out until the first week of August, you'll be able to take advantage of tax-free shopping. This opportunity applies only to qualifying Energy StarTM and WaterSenseTM products purchased for non-commercial, in-home or personal use. The purchase price must be less than $2,500 per item in order to qualify for the tax-free savings. To learn more, visit Virginia's Department of Taxation website.
Shop Smart During Virginia's Tax-Free Weekend Event
In general, using good common sense is the best way to save even more during tax-free weekend. This means comparing prices at different stores, which you can do online, and also using coupons in combination with the tax-free savings when possible.
In addition, don't make the mistake of buying items that you don't need just because of the sales tax holiday. After all, the sales tax rate in Virginia is 5.3%, unless you're shopping in Northern Virginia or Hampton Roads. Those two areas charge an additional .7% in sales tax, for a total o 6%. At these rates, you may actually be able to save more money by catching a sale before or after Virginia's tax-free weekend. So do your homework and comparison shop in advance.
Especially when it comes to items that impact your family's safety — like items you might need in a hurricane, or air conditioning to keep your little ones comfortable through the summer — consider whether buying items on sale before the sales tax weekend could help you save just as much, if not more.
